Tuesday, 4th March, 2014 - Melbourne - New York City

Each day during the 40 day visit, I will attempt to scribe the events as they occur and then add them to this website. Overtime - before, during and after the visit - the effort is to create a digital artifact of the trip. I started this digital artifact in February, 2014 and it continues to be a work in progress... I work on it when I can and I hope you enjoy the collection of images and stories, links and clips.
I will then use this as an example of how someone can use digital technology to help others understand certain concepts of self expression, a timeline of events and how someone can unpack the ideals of experience in a digital way.
(left) An image of the 'official' copy of the itinerary of the trip. Since I started travelling in 1980's, I have kept such documents. They are included in my journals and they will go into the archive at my family home in Queensland. Hopefully it will allow future generations of my family to consider the ways times have changed and how previous generations traveled.

Visiting the Public Library of New York was something I had always wanted to do but never had due to time restrictions during previous visits to NYC... I wished to do some study there and to be able to tick it off on the list of visits to the 'great libraries of the world' list. What made this even MORE special than just going to have a look was that several weeks earlier I had applied for a library card (on-line)... and read that all I needed to do was to present my passport and I would be given one...
Upon arrival, they did not have the record of it (which did actually make me a little sad). However, that was so rectified when the attendant at the desk said - 'Go over to that terminal and log on. Complete the form and I will get your card for you'.
That card has become the most special in my collection. To me it is as special as my membership card of the Friends of the Royal Academy of Art in London - (gotten while I lived in Europe in 1994-96). By getting this card it was the first time in any visit that I actually felt like I was now part of the amazing and fabulous history of the City of New York... Next time I go to NYC - I am adding 3 more days to the visit. For those 3 more days - I will do little but sit in the NYCPL and read amazing stories of history and of science and of great literature... and write in my journal. SOR

![]() The Digital Media and Learning Conference is an annual event supported by the MacArthur Foundation and organized by the Digital Media and Learning Research Hub located at the UC Humanities Research Institute, University of California, Irvine.
The conference is meant to be an inclusive, international and annual gathering of scholars and practitioners in the field, focused on fostering interdisciplinary and participatory dialog and linking theory, empirical study, policy, and practice. The fifth annual conference – DML2014 – is organized around the theme “Connecting Practices.” This year’s conference calls on us all to build shared agendas and goals, to reach across the boundaries that separate our disciplines, fields, institutions, and sectors to re-imagine the where, when, and how of educational practice. The DML2014 Conference will held between March 6-8, 2014 in Boston, Massachusetts. |

VISIT to... MAKERBOT ...in BOSTON
Saturday night was a trip across town to see and hear the
Boston Symphony Orchestra... play 3 hours of Mozart...

And this is what I heard... It was my first opportunity to hear the famous pianist Menahem Pressler. He played incredibly well. Not bad for a man who is 91 years of age... |
