... and on the way back something REALLY COOL happened...
'If we were to count our years by the revolutions we have witnessed, we might number them with the Antediluvians. So rapid have been the changes: that the mind, tho fleet in its progress, has been outstripped by them, and we are left like statues gazing at what we can neither fathom, or comprehend. Letter to Mercy Otis Warren, March 9, 1807'

Visit to Harvard University - Wadsworth House, Widener Library & The Museum of Natural History - Cambridge, Massachusetts.
There are very few universities in the world that are identified by just the one word... The name Harvard comes from the college’s first benefactor, the young minister John Harvard of Charlestown. Upon his death in 1638, he left his library and half his estate to the institution established in 1636 by vote of the Great and General Court of the Massachusetts Bay Colony.

The Widener Library
The Harry Elkins Widener Memorial Library, housing some three million books in its "labyrinth" of stacks, is the centerpiece of the Harvard University Library system. It honors 1907 Harvard College graduate and book collector Harry Elkins Widener, and was constructed by his mother after his death on the sinking of the RMS Titanic in 1912. Widener's holdings, which include materials in more than one hundred languages, comprise "one of the world's most comprehensive research collections in the humanities and social sciences," as well as lesser holdings in other areas. At the building's heart are the Widener Memorial Rooms, displaying papers and mementos recalling the life and the death of Harry Widener, as well as the Harry Elkins Widener Collection,"the precious group of rare and wonderfully interesting books brought together by Mr. Widener", to which was later added one of the few perfect Gutenberg Bibles, a gift of the Widener family in 1944.

Meeting at Wadsworth House
|
To be invited to visit Wadsworth House at Harvard University was one of the highlights of my visit to the USA. The House incorporated two fo my greatest loves; History and Academics. Built in 1726 for the president of Harvard, Benjamin Wadsworth, the house that shares his name is the second oldest building at Harvard (the first being Massachusetts Hall), and has a long and illustrious history. General George Washington, with the assistance of Henry Lee (then an officer in the Patriot Forces, and later father to General Robert E. Lee), set up his first headquarters in the house. From there, on July 3, 1775, Washington rode out to the Cambridge Common to take command of the Revolutionary troops. It is also said that the plans to oust King George III from Boston took form in Wadsworth Parlor. In 1849, when Jared Sparks decided to stay in his nearby home, presidents ceased to live in Wadsworth House. After that time, Wadsworth House took in student boarders (including Ralph Waldo Emerson '21)

Education Program
The Museum’s educational programs provides a hands-on, observation-based approach. With a growing reputation as a source of unique and effective science education and a successful partnership with Cambridge public schools, the Museum welcomes increasing numbers of school children and their families to its programs each year.
Public lectures are another of the Museum’s activities. The museum host regular free presentations by Harvard biologists, international conservationists, and popular authors that lead their audiences to a closer look at current issues in the world of science and nature. |
Glass Flowers Collection
This unique collection of over 3,000 models was created by glass artisans Leopold Blaschka and his son, Rudolf. The commission began in 1886, continued for five decades, and the collection represents more than 830 plant species.
